Abstract

This study investigates how picture book design influences children’s engagement with Jiuge, a collection of lyrical verses deeply rooted in Chinese mythology. Specifically, it aims to explore children’s responses to Jiuge picture books, identify design elements that enhance engagement, and compare traditional and modern interpretations of Jiuge narratives. Qualitative interviews were conducted with twenty-five respondents, including children aged 10 to 12, educators, and designers to gather insights into their perceptions and preferences regarding Jiuge picture books. Thematic analysis was employed to identify key themes and patterns in participants’ responses, while comparative analysis was used to contrast traditional and modern interpretations of Jiuge narratives. Children expressed high levels of engagement and emotional resonance with Jiuge picture books, whose illustrations and narrative style were pivotal to shaping their experiences. Educators and designers emphasized the importance of cultural sensitivity and authenticity in Jiuge picture book design, highlighting the potential of picture books as tools for promoting cultural diversity and understanding. This study contributes to the fields of children’s literature, education, and cultural representation by providing practical insights for creators, educators, and researchers interested in fostering children’s engagement with mythological narratives in contemporary picture books. It offers new perspectives on the intersection of mythology, picture book design, and cultural representation, highlighting the potential of picture books as transformative tools for promoting cultural diversity and empathy among young readers.
