Teaching Autistic Students alongside Non-autistic Students

Abstract

This study investigated the main challenges with teaching autistic students together with non-autistic students in regular classrooms from the Jordanian teacher’s perspective. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews. The sample consisted of twenty Jordanian teachers who worked at different centers for autism, including Al-Tawasul, Sanabel, and the Amman Center for Autism. The teachers working in these centers had at least two years’ teaching experience and were aged 26 to 38. Results show that teachers encountered different challenges in teaching autistic students along with non-autistic students, including classroom size, differences in comprehension capacity, a lack of training and knowledge, unexpected behaviors by autistic students, a lack of educational supervision, the attitudes of workers and non-autistic students toward autistic students, the attitudes of non-autistic students’ parents in relation to the autistic students, and teacher motivation.
