Abstract
This study explores how art-based methods can contribute to regenerative design practices that address complex social and ecological challenges. It emphasizes the importance of integrating the designer’s inner landscapes—images, emotions, and experiences—into design processes to foster personally meaningful and transformative outcomes. It argues that traditional design methodologies, often focused on external outcomes and rational decision-making, neglect the importance of introspection, intuition, and deeper reflection. Regenerative design is framed as the ability of living systems—whether individuals, organizations, or ecosystems—to adapt to change by releasing outdated practices, creating new ways to engage with the world, and renewing themselves internally. Drawing on theories from design research, psychology, and regenerative practices, the article examines how art-based methods enhance this capacity by connecting inner transformation with external action and rethinking the boundaries of human-centered design. The study, conducted in a professional education program at The Royal Danish Academy (2023–24), demonstrates how art-based approaches differ from conventional methodologies by embracing non-linear exploration, irrational material, and moments of introspection. These methods unlock unconscious insights, foster emotional resilience, and stimulate creativity, enabling holistic and sustainable design practice. The findings suggest that combining art-based methods with dominant design methodologies yields more meaningful and transformative outcomes. This hybrid approach empowers designers to address complex societal and ecological challenges while enhancing their own well-being and creative capacities. Future research should explore these methods in diverse contexts and over extended periods, advancing regenerative design practices for sustainable and inclusive futures for all.
