Assessing Community Participation in Solid Waste Management in Barangay San Miguel, Calumpit, Bulacan

Abstract

Solid waste issue is one of the perennial problems in the Municipality of Calumpit in the Province of Bulacan, Philippines. The study aims to address challenges in solid waste management focusing on communal participation and identifying factors affecting the involvement. The data collected quantitatively with 30 respondents through structured survey questionnaires utilizing descriptive statistics. Results show a moderate participation level, with high adherence to garbage collection schedules, proper waste segregation, and local ordinances, but low involvement in community clean-up drives and campaigns. The study concludes that identified barriers including lack of time, interests, proper and accessible facilities like Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), and irregular garbage collection schedules especially in flood-prone areas hindered their active participation. Moreover, this underscores the need for policy reforms prioritizing incentive-based programs, stricter enforcement of policies and ordinances, improved waste facilities, and enhanced communication strategies to improve environmental sustainability and community involvement in Barangay San Miguel.
